'I HAD ALL OF CONSCIENCE' '

-The Amazing Story of Martin Pistorius hate Barney. No wonder. For 12 years while he was in a coma that doctors described as "vegetative state", nurses played endless reruns of Barney - thinking he could not see or hear anything - while he remained seated and strapped to his wheelchair.
But Martin was not the "plant" the doctors said he was. In fact, I could see and hear everything.
"I can not even tell you how much he hated Barney," he recently told NPR.
In the 1980s, Martin was a typical young South African assets. But when he was 12, he was stricken by an illness that left them baffled doctors, and eventually resulted in the loss of ability to move the limbs, making eye contact and finally to speak.
His parents, Rodney and Joan Pistorius, were told that he was a "vegetable" and that the best they could do would be to take him home and keep him comfortable until he died.
But the young man continued to live despite the diagnosis.
"Martin simply persisted, persisted," said his mother.
Now, in a new autobiography, "Ghost Boy: My Escape From the Life Locked Inside My Own Body" [Boy Phantom: My Escape a Presa Life Inside My Own Body], Martin found that although at first he had remained unconscious as the doctors thought, after about two years, he began to wake up, eventually becoming aware of everything that was around him.
Martin's father, Rodney, cared for the child throughout the trial, and recalls the daily routine of waking up at five in the morning to prepare Martin for a day a center of special treatment.
"Eight hours later I sought him, bathed him, fed him, put him to bed, programmed the alarm for two hours later to wake him and not let him have diaper rash," said Rodney to the NPR report .
However, Martin remembers that at one point her mother lost hope, and as she looked at him, thinking that he could not hear her, said: "I hope you die."
But he listened.
"Yes, I was there, not from the beginning, but about two years after you enter the vegetative state, I began to wake up," said Martin.
"I was aware of everything, just like any normal person. Everyone was so used to my absence, I did not realize when I started to be again. I was struck by the harsh reality that I would spend the rest of my life like that:. All alone "
With your brain active, but the body without reaction, Martin initially thought he was stuck and would remain so.
"Not really thinking about anything," said Martin. "You just there. It is a very dark place to be because, in a sense, you allow yourself to disappear. My mind was trapped in a useless body, my arms and legs were not under my control and my voice was changing. I could not make a sign or make sounds to alert people that gave was conscious again. I was invisible -. The ghost boy "" No one has ever treat me tenderly. No one will ever love me, "he thought. "You are doomed."
But once again, Martin did not give up and said that eventually reconciled with the words of his mother.
"The rest of the world seemed so far away when she said those words," he recalled, but then realized that "over time, gradually learned to understand the despair of my mother. Every time she looked at me, I could see only a cruel parody of the child who had loved and had been healthy. "
Eventually, Martin's body began to answer your mind and inexplicably began to recover. He learned to communicate using a computer and began to expand their world beyond the limits that had obstructed.
In 2008, he met the love of her life, Joanna, and emigrated to the UK. In 2010, he started his own business.
Today he is 39 years old, is married to Joanna and lives a fully functional and normal life in Harlow, England.
Martin's story is not as unusual as it sounds. In recent years, there have been many cases of people diagnosed with "brain dead" or that supposedly were in a "vegetative state" and later recovered and showed that they were fully aware of what was happening around them.
In one case particularly "chilling", a young man named Zach Dunlap revealed that it was fully aware while doctors and family members discussed how to donate his organs. Just a few moments before he was taken to the operating room so that their organs were removed, a family member put a nail in the nail of your big toe, causing an unexpected reaction. The surgery was canceled, and Zach recovered.
Cases like these are fueling a growing debate about the accuracy of diagnosis of "vegetative state" and "brain death".
