Historic Spa-Francorchamps was once again the setting for one of the most eventful races of the season, ending in Kimi Räikkönen and Scuderia Ferrari’s first race victory of 2009. The surprise package of Giancarlo Fisichella’s Force India took second place (from pole position on the grid) and Sebastian Vettel claimed the final spot on the podium.
The only previous victor at Spa, Kimi Räikkönen lined up sixth on the grid behind the unexpected front row of Giancarlo Fisichella and Jarno Trulli. With more fuel on board and the Shell-protected KERS, Räikkönen took advantage of a slow starting Barrichello and the 80 extra horsepower to climb to second by the Les Combes chicane. After a multi-car pile-up which took out the Drivers’ Championship leader, Jenson Button, the safety car was deployed. After the restart Räikkönen powered his way past Fisichella on the Kemmel Straight to find himself in first place, a position he retained until the chequered flag, thanks to a well-executed race strategy.
