JAPAN Suzuka Race Briefing

Hello Lionel

Hello and welcome to another Inside Track, brought to you by Shell. Like Monza, Singapore saw an excellent result for Scuderia Ferrari with a race win for Fernando Alonso putting him firmly in the running for the Drivers’ Championship title. Two weeks later and we head to the 5.8km Suzuka circuit for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Suzuka is a track that is favoured by the drivers due to its varied corners, ranging from the hairpin to the esses. The circuit is one of a kind on the Formula One calendar due to its figure of eight layout. The overpass, known as the crossing, is followed by the 130R corner which has been likened to Spa Francorchamps Eau Rouge as it is taken at almost full throttle. These characteristics of the 53-lap race will be demanding on the F10’s aerodynamics package, as the high speed corners and rapid direction changes require maximum downforce. The 5.8 km circuit presents a number of overtaking opportunities, which should allow for racing at its most exciting.

The straights and high speed bends at Suzuka require a great deal of power making fuel consumption a hot topic for the team strategists; Shell works closely with Scuderia Ferrari to develop the Shell V-Power Racing fuel for the F10 to achieve consistent and optimum performance.

Finally, this instalment of Inside Track brings with it another exclusive podcast. Mike Evans, Shell Fuels Project Leader for Ferrari, gives his thoughts on the race and explains some of the challenges which Shell will face as technical partners of Scuderia Ferrari.

Hope you enjoy the race!
